“Is it make-able?” Nathan Florence ponders to the camera, before paddling out to a fleeting sandbar somewhere along the North Shore of Oahu. “9 out of 10 are not, but if you get that one, it’s all worth it.”
Spoiler alert: Florence does not get that one. Rather, he spends his session getting manhandled by an unpredictable (and nearly unsurfable) sand-bottom slab. “I got way more worked than I probably should have,” Florence recounts afterwards, digging sand out of his ears. “And I had close to a two-wave hold down.” Not what you typically see from Florence, one of the best in the world in slabbing waves.
While he does eventually make a couple of nice tubes, it’s Kiron Jabour that clearly wins the day, streaking through a two-section mutant double up and flying out with the spit. Despite the lack of completed tubes in this clip, it still makes for very entertaining viewing. There’s something about watching your favorite surfers eat humble pie.
