Hawaii’s been getting most of the attention when it comes to big waves this winter.
The historic Black Friday swell stole the show late last month on Maui and Oahu. It wiped out innocent bystanders, got Kai Lenny out to massive Jaws, and Nathan Florence and Koa Rothman surfed huge outer reefs on Oahu.
But let’s not forget about the other big wave spots that were on fire too. Over in California Mavericks was breaking, and in Portugal, Nazaré has been serving up huge waves and mental surf sessions too.
Australian surf cinematographer Tim Bonython, who has a fascination with the world’s biggest, most beautiful, and gnarliest waves, has been shooting Nazaré and just released the edit above. It’s captioned:
“Here we go again with a day that surprised everyone. What all of us thought was going to be an average day of action ended up being one of the bigger days of the year.
“I even slept in thinking the surfers would be cruising but I started getting calls [from the] crew saying it’s PUMPING! So I jumped up, grabbed my gear, and off I went.”
Bonython adds that the waves got up to 30 to 45 feet and he ended up shooting from the land and water.
In true Bonython fashion, the video doesn’t have much chit-chat and serves up bombing waves on a platter with mostly music only.

“Some of the best surfing shots I have ever seen! And so full of detail – the land shot showing what has to be at least a 15-wave line-up. That brave soul trying to paddle out of the impact zone and getting creamed for his trouble. Those contre-jour shots of the surfer disappearing behind the crest and popping up right in the center of the shot! Respect to everyone involved.”
