What do you think makes someone a good surfer? Think about it for a second or two. Whatd’ya come up with?
Is it someone who rips? Who can bust airs and charge huge waves? Or is it a surfer with a smooth, graceful style like a longboarder? Maybe a blissed-out kid just learning to surf?
Or is it someone, who like most of us, don’t surf that good, but just get so much damn joy from riding waves?
Dave Rastovich is here to help us redefine what it means to be a goof surfer in a short edit just released by Patagonia.
Patagonia captioned the video above:
“Good surfers pass the stoke, bring people into the community, protect our peaks, teach ocean safety and mentor future generations. They haven’t forgotten why they surf or the fun. Let’s redefine what it means to be a good surfer.”
“What is a good surfer? What makes someone a good surfer?”
Those are the questions asked by narrator and (good) surfer Dave “Rasta” Rastovich.
According to the film, a good surfer is:
- “Sincere, but not serious.”
- “Someone who knows how to eat shit and come up laughing.”
- “Someone who picks up that ciggy butt you pass on the beach or pickup that plastic bag that floats by you in the lineup.”
- “Grateful, just stoked to be in the water, stoked to have your health and so happy to have the time to go surfing.
- “Being a good surfer is about giving more than you take.”
Press play above to hear even more qualities of a “good surfer.”
But in the end, Rasta reasons:
“The idea of good and bad surfers is just an idea. It’s just surfing.”
