As we’ve seen in recent days and weeks, the Wedge is open for business.
There’s been plenty of glory, but mostly carnage, from SoCal’s premier shorebreak (see here, here, and here). Yeah, lots of Wedge lately; like a car crash, it’s hard not to look.
But here’s something different, and not exactly from the Wedge, but in the same vicinity.

The clip shows a crew on a SUPsquatch – a gigantic, multi-person standup paddleboard – as they attempt to ride a wave inside Newport Harbor, just south of the Wedge.
Waves only break within the harbor when it’s really big, which, thanks to a steady run of south swell and a solid start to the summer season, it has been. (Hence all the Wedge videos recently.)
Unfortunately for the SUPsquatch crew, they lose control of the massive craft, veering towards the rocks, and eventually hitting the eject button. Good timing, too, as the craft then gets washed up on the jetty.

There’s commentary on the video, as someone watching says: “Bail! Bail!!!”
As expected, there was some gold in the comments section, too:
“I’ve been stuck out there … pray big sets don’t roll in…. rocks or smash… either way dead.”
“What’s the phrase… Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
“A triple on the rocks for me please.”
Luckily, it looks like everyone came out unscathed. Maybe a couple scratches or bruises here or there, but no reports of anything major.
And stay tuned for more madness from the Wedge, as this swell train keeps chugging.
