Drop-ins, collisions, arguments, disagreements, water splashing, back-paddling, localism enforcement…these are all fairly common in surfing.
However, these days, it’s pretty rare for an altercation to come to blows. “Let’s take it to the beach!” many an angry surfer will propose. Then, nothing.
But it does still happen, occasionally; like this surfer vs. skimboarder brawl below.
Details are scarce surrounding the who, what, when, where and why of the clip, but it’s definitely nothing super recent. And it comes from fail video/meme account @Craigslistsurfboards, so, yeah, who knows about the particulars.
What is clear is that a skimboarder locked into shorebreak pointbreak-ish wave. It looks like a surfer was already on the wave, caught from further outside, before the skimboarder entered the picture. Then, the two got into it on the wave, and after.
Who’s in the wrong, who’s right? That’s up for debate.
And debate folks did in the comments, but mainly over the futility of fighting over one foot waves in the first place:
“If u’re fighting over a 1ft wave, you are a kook for sure 😂”
“If someone wants to do a random tandem on a 1ft wave, i’m more likely to give a high 5”
“I checked with a certified wave lawyer slash douche: Skimmer def has right of way access to the territory, but the surfers right precedes and dictates said access to right of way. In a court of wave, the surfer wins, however; in the court of fists, my moneys on the skimmer here. Cheers!”
So, who’s in the wrong? Skimboarder or surfer? Or maybe both, since they brought it to blows over such an inconsequential wave.
