The reverence and weight behind the Eddie Aikau Invitational looms almost as large as the waves themselves when the contest is called on at Waimea Bay…almost.
“There’s no event this prestigious, as monumental, and as powerful as the Eddie Aikau,” said big-wave World Champ, Billy Kemper. “It’s the biggest event in the history of surfing.”
Seems like a lot of pressure, huh? For a behind-the-scenes look inside this year’s Eddie Aikau Invitational, check out the latest episode of Red Bull’s Life of Kai below.
But before Kai Lenny competes in the Eddie, there’s the Backdoor Shootout. And even though Kai is considered one of the best big-wave surfers in history, and a harbinger of surfing innovation, he’s not immune from the proving grounds aspect of Oahu’s North Shore.
Waves like Pipeline still command massive amounts of time and respect for mastery – even for guys like Kai. Luckily, he snagged a good one during the event; Kai said:
“My highlight moment from that entire event was actually picking off the best Pipe wave I’ve ever had. Being called into it by Kelly Slater, getting spat out of the tube, and kicking out next to Larry Haynes – that’ll probably be one of the most memorable surfing rides I’ve ever had.”
And shortly after that, it was time for the Eddie.
“When you receive an invite to this event, you are being honored as one of the best big-wave riders in the world,” said big-wave legend, Pete Mel. “I know that was a huge thing for Kai to receive that invite, and he didn’t disappoint. He went out there, and he wanted to prove that he could be one of the best big-wave riders in the world…especially that day.”
This episode follows just the beginning of Kai’s campaign in the Eddie. (Spoiler: he placed fifth when it was all said and done). So, stay tuned for the next episode to see the finale.
“It’s an absolute dream come true to surf in the Eddie,” Kai said. “I’ve been dreaming of that moment since I was a little kid. Then, all of a sudden, I’m here.”
