Ben Gravy’s gonna Ben Gravy.
The guy’s life mission is to find, and surf, the world’s whackiest waves.
His latest stop? North Carolina.
In this episode of Gravy’s vlog, we tag along for a journey to the Tar Heel State in search of a mythic tanker wave, which Ben’s been trying to score for three years. And this time, the stars align with Ben and a ragtag group of locals chasing down gigantic cargo ships somewhere in a North Carolina inlet, and catching the reverberant waves.
Per the video’s description:
“Three years in the making! We went through hell & high water to find & surf these tanker waves in North Carolina. The journey all started a few years back when Tanner invited me down to do some ferry wave surfing & we quickly realized that these tankers are MUCH bigger than the passing ferry boats. All of that behind us now, we did it!”
It’s not one of Ben’s most epic scores; the wave is pretty small and gutless, to be honest. But you gotta hand it to the guy. His dedication is pretty undeniable.
But for Ben, it’s not so much about the quality of wave, rather the novelty factor. It’s his version of “it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey” …or whatever.
As Ben described this wave:
“It’s almost like a myth. There’s a bunch of blurry iPhone videos, and tales of paddleboarders going out. But there’s no hard evidence that there’s actually a wave.
“It’s almost like when pirates used to go looking for treasure. That kind of vibe.”
If there ever was a novelty wave pirate, Ben would be it.
