The Mentawai Islands are what surfers’ dreams are made of.
But despite the modern comforts visitors find there today, locals still don’t have access to health care, education, and proper nutrition.
Kandui Resort, the luxe surf camp by Rifles and Kandui Left, recently launched the Kandui Foundation to help the Mentawai people. Last month, the foundation shared success stories about locals getting medical help. Now, it’s tackling food security.
Kandui Foundation captioned the post above:
“Harvest Time. How does our Food Sustainability Program Work? One of the biggest issues we see in the Mentawais is the dependency on the mainland for things as simple as vegetables.
“Each week, the Mentawai imports 1000s of kilos of items that are readily available to grow in our local area. The issue lies not with the land being unfarmable but with local farmers not having the financial means to start a business to create crops to sell locally in the Mentawais.
“The Kandui Foundation currently has 2 farmers in our area that are funded 100% by Kandui Foundation Donations. How is this done?
“1. The Kandui Foundation purchases land that can be farmed.
“2. The Kandui Foundation purchases all the farming supplies, seeds and everything associated with farming the land.
“3. The Kandui Foundation sponsors a local farmer to farm the land and pays for all the startup fees to him/her to start their business.
“4. The farmer sells the crops and keeps 100% of the sales and invests them for the next round of crops.
“5. After the initial fees, a local farmer has his own business and very little funding is required after the initial investment.
“Interested in sponsoring a Farmer? You can sponsor a farmer for as little as $1,000 US. This one time donation is enough for a local farmer to get off the ground and start his own business that sustains itself. The alone provides food sustainability in our local area and gives a local farmer a self-sustaining long term private business.”
