In just a few days, perhaps weeks depending on the forecast, Carissa Moore will paddle out at Pipeline; it will be her last as a full-time pro surfing competitor.
On Friday, Moore announced her retirement from the World Surf League’s Championship Tour. The 31-year-old will end her run from regular competition – which saw her win five world titles and one Olympic gold medal – with the 2024 Pipe Pro, the Tahiti Pro, and the Paris 2024 Games in Teahupo’o, Tahiti.
“The Pipe Pro will be my final event on the Championship Tour,” Carissa penned in her retirement announcement. “It seems most fitting to finish at home where it all started.”
And so, based on this massive loss to competitive surfing’s foremost organization, it seemed fitting for the WSL to lookback on Moore’s dominance at the world’s deadliest wave.
“The 5x World Champ and O’ahu native will leave her mark on Pipeline again for the first stop of the 2024 Championship Tour,” the WSL captioned the video. “As we get closer to landing on the North Shore, relive all of her highlights at the Pipe Pro.”
Ever since the women’s event moved to Pipeline, instead of Honolua Bay on Maui – which happened by chance due to a tragic, fatal shark attack – Carissa has been at the forefront of female charging at the infamous, perilous North Shore wave.
In 2023, she won the event; the year before she placed second to another pioneering Hawaiian Pipeline charger, Moana Jones Wong.
But this year, it will be Carissa’s last. Can she take home the W one more time?
