Sometimes, a surf spot’s name can tell you a lot about the wave.
Take Dungeons, in South Africa, for example. The name does not evoke a user-friendly, mellow vibe. Quite the opposite, actually.
Because of that, not many surf the wave. But South Africa’s own, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, is not like most surfers. And recently, Twig took on the day of the year at Dungeons.
In a new edit from Now Now Media and Surfline, that day was documented.
“Dungeons hasn’t given someone the ultimate ride yet,” says Twig in the video.
“[One where] you takeoff on that outside ledge that just kinda chips you in. Then, you come off the bottom, and you pull into the barrel.
“We see those waves all the time when you’re out there. But the risk is extreme.”
The wave is like a mixture of Jaws, Mavericks, and Shipstern Bluff – except far less perfect than the latter two. And much more sketchy, and much less perfect.
But recently, Twig and friends surfed the day of the year out at Dungeons, scoring XXL waves and, most importantly, making it out of there alive.
For more on the wave, here’s an explanation from Twig:
“Dungeons is a gnarly wave to surf. In the early days, we used to park at the harbor, and you’d walk up through the township, and over the cliff. You can see Dungeons below, and you walk down the steep cliff. You paddle out across the shark channel; it’s just like a deepwater in between the seal island and the actual reef. The water is all churned up there and bouncing off the reef. It’s one of the scariest places I’ve ever paddled. You just know there has to be at least one giant shark beneath you.”
