Some surfboards just…work.
They stand the test of time, flying off the racks at surf shops around the globe for season after season by veteran surfers, aspiring groms, and weekend warriors alike.
Case and point: the Dumpster Diver from Channel Islands.
The video above comes from Dane Reynolds’ video operation, Chapter 11 TV, and it shows Dane riding (and absolutely ripping, obviously) the long-lasting Dumpster Diver…some 14ish years since it was debuted to the public.
For a refresher, the board came about back in the late 2000s. Dane tested it on a trip to Mexico, then nearly won the 2009 Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles on the thing (a rare moment of competitive commitment from Dane’s career).
Since then, the board has stuck. Everyone had to have one of those stubby, exceptionally rippable little surfboards.
For a bit more on the history, here’s a snippet from an old blog post from CI:
“So Danes been seen ripping it up on a little stubby wide real basic design 5-7 1 /2 19 1/2 2 3/8 flyer type thingy throughout trestles. Here’s the skinny ! We shaped a short stubby square tail for Dane to ride in Mexico on his quiksilver photo trip with Kelly and Julian about two weeks ago .It was nicknamed Dumpster Diver because we literally had to wrestle the garbage man for the old yellow square block of eps foam that we were about to toss. This board was shaped out of that raw blank of foam by hand. The machine was down that day so or we would of cut a stubby version of the flyer on it to achieve basically the same concept but had no choice but to do it this way.”
Think he still rides the same dims? According to the vid title above, he’s added a couple inches to the length. Maybe a little bit more volume added over the years, too; understandable since his days in the ring are done, and he’s gone and become a dad.
Regardless, the thing still goes. Especially with Dane on one.
Long live the Dumpster Diver.
