Surfing, unlike a lot of sports, is doable at both ends of the age continuum.
Young and old, surfers can ride waves in some capacity throughout their lives. Look at Kelly Slater – he is both the youngest and oldest surfing world champion, winning the title first when he was 20 years old, then at age 39. And at 51, currently, he’s still competing.
So, this next guy, Eric Akiskalian, who clocks in at a whopping 63 years old, might just be the oldest big wave tow surfer presently in the game.
Akiskalian primarily tow surfs swells in the Pacific Northwest, like the recent(ish) edit from a session seen above, and another one further down below.
So, what’s this dude’s story? Well, his bio on YouTube gives some insights:
“In 1998, at 38 years of age, I embarked on a new life journey of becoming a professional Towsurfer. Since then, I have been traveling the globe in search of some of the heaviest waves while challenging myself and inner fears.
“Such locations include Nazare, Pe’ahi, Mavericks, Shark Park, Mouse Rock, Coon Creek, Cortes Banks, Teahupo’o, Fiji, Punta de Lobos, Iquique, Todos Santos, Puerto Escondido, Mainland Mexico, PNW and the North Shore.
“I am the current record holder for the biggest wave ever surfed in the PNW at South Reef on Nov. 2, 2010 with an estimated wave height of 65’. Today, my passion for riding big waves continues and ocean safety is my no.1 priority.
“With 25 years of PWC/RWC rescue operator and tow surfing experience I am now allow able to share my knowledge, experience and unique skill set with all those who want to learn and train. Follow me as I surround myself with amazing friends and athletes, while we prepare for each new swell and share amazing sessions.”
Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.
