Pro surfers don’t party like they used to.
Take, for example, the Volcom house on the North Shore of Oahu. After a major event like the Pipe Masters, there’d be a blowout of booze, babes, bros, and brawls. (See: Bruce Irons’ win in 2001, then his brother Andy’s in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2006.)
Full-on ragers. The good ‘ol days.
Nowadays, not so much. Pro surfers need to wake up early to train. They need to maintain peak physical prowess (i.e. no beer bellies). They’re athletes.
So, following John John Florence’s win at the 2023 Vans Pipe Masters, there wasn’t a debaucherous, booze-soaked house party to celebrate.
Instead, like distinguished and responsible gentleman, JJF and his posse had a celebratory dinner at Turtle Bay’s fancy dining establishment, Lei Lei’s.
And Koa Rothman took us to the scene, virtually. (Our invite got lost in the mail.)
“What an event it was, and now it is time to party,” Koa said. “We just pulled up to Lei Lei’s, our local bar and restaurant here at Turtle Bay. And this is where the celebration will start.”
Mai tais started flowing…moderately.
Then it was time to hit the dancefloor.
$100 says John pulled an Irish exit, skipped that part, and went to bed.
