Nathan Florence is on his own program.
Unlike his brothers – John, who fights for world titles on the Championship Tour; or Ivan, who primarily focuses on stylishly riding the biggest tubes of the winter at home on the North Shore – Nate travels the world for heavy waves, vlogging along the way.
His latest stop? A slab in Sydney, Australia.
“Hawaii had a terrible season, now look where we are,” said Nate. “Back on the slab tour.”
Seems like Nate’s been on somewhat of a slab kick lately, hence the “slab tour” he mentioned. In the past couple days alone, he shared a video with some sketchy wipeouts at an undisclosed slab; then he joined Koa Rothman for a session at a shark-infested slab during a Hawaiian hurricane.
Makes you think: what if there actually was a Slab Tour? A competitive circuit solely dedicated to scoring below sea level, sketchy slab waves? If anyone was to surf in it – and likely dominate – it would be Nate. But for now, it’s just him. And we’re cool with that, too.
As for his most recent slab conquest in Sydney, Nate explained:
“We absolutely scored this insane little slab. Couldn’t have asked for a better setup. Not super crowded. Epic crew out there. Everyone was super friendly. The bodyboarders were getting drained, the surfers were getting drained. Everyone was getting waves. There was plenty to go around. It’s so fun surfing new waves. That’s my favorite part of surfing. It had this funny chip in and wedge, straight into this dry reef section. To me, it was as fun as a slab could be.”
