We all knew this was coming…
As surfing progresses further above-the-lip and into the air, it’s looking more and more like its boardsport counterparts, skateboarding and snowboarding. And one surfer is taking that progression to a whole new level. Meet Kevin Meza, aka the Baja Koala.
Meza has a handful of novelty tricks on lock, including 360 shuv-its, fingerflips, shuv-it body varials, and more. And he’s gaining attention from some surf world heavyweights for his above-the-lip antics.
“Dope,” commented Dane Reynolds on one clip.
“Gnarly,” wrote Jamie O’Brien on another.
“Mental,” chirped Dion Agius.
For a little more info on the mysterious Baja Koala, his sponsor, Salty Crew, posted a profile vid with the following description:
“Kevin lives in Ensenada and is known for his skate inspired surf tricks. From fingerflips to shuv its, this koala has a pouch full of special tricks and watching him spill them out all over the playful faces of San Miguel is some of the funnest surf viewing possible.”
Is this the future of surfing? Perhaps. Whatever the case, the Baja Koala is certainly ahead of his time, and a helluva good time for us mere mortals to watch.
