We’ve been watching Maui big wave surfer Kai Lenny have a wild winter.
He charged insanely huge surf at big wave spots like Jaws, Nazaré, and Mavericks; spoke out about fear and clarity in big wave surfing; got eaten alive by a massive wave at Jaws; and went to Vegas to receive what may be his highest honor yet—a Taco Bell award.
But that wasn’t it. In January, he almost died from a severe concussion he suffered during his heat in the Da Hui’s Backdoor Shootout. Since then, he’s continued his recovery journey while chasing more monstrous surf. But there’s more, and it’s all detailed in the latest episode of ‘The Life of Kai.’

The episode begins with Lenny and his brother, Ridge, doing some pre-season training on Maui.
“Time has been flying. I felt like last year, it was kind of like a weird ending to the winter because January was so historic. The Eddie Aikau ran. Big waves out at Jaws. Just as I was gaining momentum, February hit and it went flat. It just seems like this long flat summer finally is over, and we’re thrust into big wave season.”
From there, it’s on with almost a half-hour of Lenny’s big wave life.
