The Wave, a wave pool in England, closed for surfing yesterday after it froze over as temperatures dropped to lows of -5C, or around 23 degrees Fahrenheit.
A spokesperson for The Wave said there was a “mesmerising’ moment when the waves cracked the ice with a crunchy shatter,” according to a story by Bristol Live.
Experience the “mesmerising” moment below.
Jools Parsons, a surf coach at The Wave, posted the clip above and captioned it:
“Morning Ice breaker @the wave”
The clip above shows a peaceful morning at The Wave. The pool’s surface is calm and reflective.
A small wave slowly rolls through the pool, and as it rises, the sheet of ice reveals itself as it cracks into chunks.
Turn up the volume, because you can hear the crunching sound too.
Beautiful.
A representative told told Bristol Live that although the pool froze last year too, it’s a “very infrequent occurrence.”
The new source added:
“It is not the first time extreme temperatures have affected the surfing lake – as well as freezing last year, the water also turned a strange green colour during a heatwave in 2022. The high temperatures during the months-long heatwave, with higher than usual levels of UV radiation, caused an algae bloom, The Wave said at the time, which was responsible for the green colour.
“Heatwaves feel very far off at the moment, after a wave of Arctic air plunged the UK into an icy-snap. Snow has fallen across large parts of the country – though little in the South West – and temperatures everywhere have fallen below zero degrees.”
