Jamie O’Brien has a lot of fun.
Early in the season, he surfed the North Shore’s huge outer reefs during the historic Black Friday swell. Then he foiled around the Golden Gate Bridge with big wave surfer Kai Lenny.
When the contests started, he surfed the Pipe Masters with Ben Gravy as his caddy and then replaced Kelly Slater on team A New Earth Project during Da Hui’s Backdoor Shootout. In the video below, he’s off the rock again chasing surf in Fiji.
On the way there, O’Brien’s crew runs into fellow pro surfer Ian Gentil in the airport and they join forces for the trip.
After a workout in Fiji fresh off the plane, O’Brien recaps:
“We just got done with our workout, about a fifty-minute workout, five hundred calories. Arms are feeling ready and strong for the swell.
“We’re gettin’ it before the swell. It’s good to be in shape and physically and mentally ready for it, and hopefully, that’ll bring out the best possible surfing that could go down on this trip.
“It’s good for you because you’re gonna see epic, epic surfing and epic waves and just all around an epic time.”
Eventually, they surf Cloudbreak, Fiji’s famed lefthand reef break. It’s beautiful, it’s barreling, but it’s not quite perfect.
Still, O’Brien and the boys are stoked and head to a local grom contest to give back.
At the contest, O’Brien explains:
“We took a break from surfing Cloudbreak and we wanted to come and meet some of the local next-generation kids that are learning to surf here and competing in surf contests.”
A board is given away, groms are stoked, and friendships are made.
