This one hurts.
At least it does if you’re a competitor at the WSL’s just finished Challenger Series stop at Snapper. Sure, the comp ran in fun waves all week: head high, rippable, and better than most locations on the schedule.
But it looked nothing like this:
Two days after the WSL packed up the scaffolding and the surfers headed south to Sydney (where conditions are just OK), the Superbank lit up with what locals are calling “the day of the year” — a heavy claim considering Snapper was pumping for nearly a month before the WSL came to town.
So, for it to look like this just before and after the event waiting period? That’s more than just salt in the wounds, that’s gasoline on a blazing fire.
For whatever reason, the WSL has been having similar bad luck throughout the year so far, with Pipeline, Sunset and Portugal turning up average, after pumping before each event.
Is Mother Nature purposely torturing the WSL?
Fortunately for them, the next CT is in Lemoore, the only place where the ocean and swell timing doesn’t matter. From there, let’s hope El Salvador, J-Bay and Tahiti flip the bad wave script — it’s about time the surfers and fans are served another score.
