You can now go green to the core.
Of your surfboard, that is.
The latest Instagram post from Eco Surf Supply shows the harvesting process of agave grown in Kenya and it’s formation into a surfboard blank ready to be shaped, and eventually surfed.
Eco Surf Supply captioned the post:
“πΏ Agave, the heart and soul form our project, is not just a plant. Itβs a symbol of commitment to a greener world. By harnessing its natural strength, you can create surfboards that are stronger and more eco-friendly than ever before. ππ And the BEST part is: It will take you nearly the same amount of time than shaping a standard foam blank.”
The video above shows the agave plant’s pole being cut down with a chainsaw, before being milled, sanded, and eventually combined with other pieces into a raw blank.
The blanks, and the agave used for them, are grown and created by Kenyan company Grow Blanks. The company’s workshop is situated on one of the largest agave farms in the world, where the organically-grown agave is then turned into sisal fiber.
According to ScienceDirect, sisal fiber is valued because of its strength, durability, ability to stretch, affinity for certain dyestuffs, and is resistant to deterioration in saltwater.
Grow Blanks was founded in 2021, with the assistance of a Kickstarter campaign after Zimbabwe-born founder Daniel Treloar “looked into ways of using the sisal agave plantsβ poles as an alternative for foam.”
It looks like viewers were pretty stoked on the concept. Check out some of the comments below:
