New Jersey novelty surfer teams up with Jacob “Zeke” Szekely for historic manmade tube
A few days back, we brought you the first glimpse at Ben Gravy’s hard-to-comprehend, freakishly hollow tube-ride from a ferry wake somewhere in New Jersey.
And now, we’ve got footage from the full session. Gravy, arguably the king of novelty waves and one of the biggest vloggers in the surfing space, teamed up with fellow YouTuber and hijinks hellraiser, Jacob “Zeke” Szekely, for the strike mission. And he didn’t stop with the ferry wake tube; to up the novelty factor, Gravy and Zeke also tossed in a good ol’ fashioned shoot-the-pier session for good measure.
But the highlight of the video, of course, is the ferry wake tube-ride that Gravy snags. “It’s Kelly Slater wavepool-ing!” Zeke screams from the jetski, as he tracks Gravy in the barrel. And he’s not wrong. The wave does have an uncanny resemblance to Slater’s Surf Ranch, and it’s probably the first-ever barrel from a ferry wake ridden by a surfer in history. At least…the first one documented.
“Absolutely honored and mind-blown to have the opportunity to surf the biggest and best ferry wave in history right here at home,” wrote Gravy about the session.
Zeke also snagged a couple waves during the ferry wake super session, scoring one in particular at the 19:15-minute mark above that offered a steep lip and the opportunity for a few serious slaps off the top. He followed it up with a soft-top to shortboard transfer seen below:
“Ferry Surfing FOR THE DREAM!! I’ve been Dreaming of Surfin this Novelty Wave for awhile now, so I’m beyond Hyped to have successfully pulled a Lil Board Transfer on the Ferry Wave,” wrote Zeke.
So, what’s next for these two? Surfing behind a Carnival mega-cruise ship? Tow-surfing through the Amsterdam canals? Acid-dropping from a helicopter? (Oh wait, Taj Burrow already did that one.) Either way, this one’s gonna be tough to top; but we’re sure they’ll think of something.
