Nazaré, Portugal, is home to the biggest waves in the world.
Literally, it played host to the Guinness Book of World Records “Largest Wave Surfed,” which was ridden by Sebastian Steudtner in 2020, measuring 86 feet.
But it’s not always massive, record-breaking waves at Nazaré. And, in fact, at certain sizes, it’s even manageable for mere mortals; like seen below:
The clip comes from October 8th, and it shows a refreshing look at the world’s largest wave. It’s overhead, peaky, and barreling. Maybe not as exciting as waves as big as buildings, but still pretty cool to see it in another light. It’s almost like, after all the crazy footage we’ve seen coming out of there over the years, we’ve become a bit desensitized.
The video was captioned as such:
“October 22nd 2023, epic barrels all afternoon in the spot that’s more known for the biggest waves on the planet. Incredible action that at least I didn’t expect!”
Folks in the comments agreed, too; a nice change of pace:
“Seeing Nazaré in a “normal” state is refreshing. We are so used to it with those crazy winter 30 feet swell that I didn’t even knew that it had such a great wave for normal people”
“Wow! I had no idea that Nazare broke like this when it’s smaller. So cool.”
“This is what I am talking about. So much better than those massive fat mush burgers.”
So, would you paddle out at this size?
