The Wedge, in Newport Beach, is a man-made anomaly. It takes a 3-foot summer swell and triples it in size and intensity, making for Southern California’s most entertaining wave. Like Pipeline in Hawaii, it draws massive crowds in the water (and on the beach) every time in breaks.
So, it makes sense why Jamie O’Brien, who grew up surfing Pipeline, would hunt XXL swells at Wedge. Nobody feels more comfortable than O’Brien in a heavy left tube.
What doesn’t make sense is how well O’Brien can knife a softtop under the lip at Wedge before toying with the tube. He’s truly in a league of his own.
Click play to watch O’Brien and crew tackle surprisingly uncrowded XXL wedge during the swell of the summer (so far)
