The “Da Hui Backdoor Shootout” is the best surf contest you probably didn’t watch live. A grassroots team based comp that’s held with little marketing and without major fanfare, it’s run in the best Pipeline of every winter, and attracts the best Pipe surfers in the world — both local and abroad.
In the clip above, Red Bull brings us behind-the-scenes with the “A New Earth” team: Kelly Slater, Kai Lenny, Carissa Moore, Koa Smith and Matahi Drollet, as they compete together (and for individual accolades) at perfect Pipe last January.
Curious what “A New Earth” is all about? In short, it “started as a conversation between surfers on the North Shore of Oahu and has grown into a robust movement to raise awareness of the scale of plastic pollution in waterways. The initiative brings together the voices of ocean and water advocacy groups with organizations in the supply chain equipped to bring solutions to the table to remediate the problems that exist today. With a team built by founder Wes Carter, president of Atlantic Packaging, one of the largest privately held packaging companies in North America, the initiative is supported by veterans from the surf, outdoor, film, and packaging industries.”
It’s a rad company with big plans and a real vision for executing them. Click here to learn more about how you can get involved as a consumer.
