For the second time this week, Slater jumped on Instagram to speak directly to his fans. A few days ago he opened up about his mindset after losing in the second round in Portugal. Today, he’s detailing the surfboards he chose for the contest — breaking down their different rockers, bottom contours and fin setups, along with general design theory.
“Board and fin rundown from Portugal,” writes Slater in the caption. “6 minutes if interested in hearing me ramble. I’m never bored of design ideas and theories and I’m still constantly riding 2, 3, 4, and even 5 fins weekly. I do think I’ll finish my surfing days on twins though once all is said and done and I give a good rundown of a twin here I’ve been working on for a couple of years. More on that in the near future.”
Fun fact: Slater drew inspiration for an upcoming surfboard model from a Great White shark. Literally.

“From here, the silhouette of this board is the outline of a Great White,” says Slater, midway through this 6-minute clip. “We took photos of a Great White from above and below, and the rocker of this board actually matches up to the belly.”
Who saw that coming?
