From April to October a dedicated crew of tube hounds post up at Desert Point on Lombok. Some stay for months at a time, even though the wave might only break a handful of times.
If you’ve never been, you might be thinking: How bad could that be? Months on a beautiful beach in Indo?
The reality is the accommodation at Deserts is, well, rustic at best. And that’s being generous. The best homestays offer a fan, power and a view, while the most budget versions offer a mat on the floor and a pit toilet in a windowless room.
So yeah, it’s not for the faint of heart.
That said, it’s the best left (arguably) in Indo, and for many, the sleepless nights are more than worth the 30-second tubes. That is if you can wrangle one off the pack of hungry wolves.
We’re currently smack in the middle of Indonesia’s off-season, so it’s the perfect time to revisit Drifter Surf ambassador (and Desert Point faithful) Nick Blottnitz’s best tubes from 2023.
As you’ll see above, for Blottnitz, the juice is definitely worth the squeeze.
For most surfers? Probably best just to live vicariously through clips like this one.
