South Africa’s Matt Bromley is one of a handful of surfers in the world who seemingly have no fear in the ocean. From Jaws to Mav’s, South Africa to Indo, wherever the charts turn purple, Bromley is there.
A bit of an underground charger (compared to some of the household names in big wave surfing), Bromley speaks softly and carries a big stick…err, surfboard. And when the set of the day approaches and the horizon goes black, Bromley flips that surfboard around and takes off. Every time. No hesitation.

“Matt Bromley’s transition from competitive surfing to chasing colossal waves was spurred more by a niggling inner voice than by any external influence. He felt that something was missing and set out to push his limits as a big wave surfer. Competing since his junior years, it was at the age of seventeen that Matt first faced his fear of the unfamiliar and ferocious swells that batter the ‘Cape of Storms. Here, Matt rode his first big wave on an old borrowed ‘gun’ and quickly developed an appetite for the heavy stuff, sending him on a lifelong pursuit of ocean giants. Over the Edge follows Matt’s two-year journey expanding the boundaries of his mental and physical ability through his surfing. After a horrific wipeout at Jaws (Pe’ahi) and some missed opportunities at Mavericks, Matt manages to regain focus, establishing his full potential at the historic Nias swell by paddling one of the most prodigious waves of the year. As COVID-19 casts a cloud of global uncertainty, and at home, his personal life is changing course, Matt is presented with a small window of opportunity to head back to Jaws(Pe’ahi) for one more shot at claiming the ride of his life.”
