Albee Layer’s spent the last decade pushing the limits at Jaws.
And Jaws has also pushed back.
In 2020, Layer suffered a severe concussion out there when he took the lip of a 25-foot wave directly on the head. Three years on, while he’s still working through the concussion and its lingering effects, he’s pretty much back to his old self at the world’s biggest and heaviest slab. Today, he released the second part of a series, “The Hits So Far”, featuring his best rides from Jaws post concussion.
It’s impressive as hell.
“Since my concussion in 2019/20 winter we had two pretty average years where I was still in a daze a bit,” Layer writes on Instagram. “Think only 4 waves made it from those seasons.
“Last year I was in a different kind of fucked up headspace. An angry one. It’s a little scary how well that can work.
“It’s always interesting to think of the why to do dangerous things. For me I think figuring out the edge of human potential is important and in brief moments we test it out there. But on the selfish side I want to leave a legacy out at this wave that can’t be fucked with. I think I’m half way there. If El Niño happens next year and I’m still in this head space, I’m a do some shit that ain’t been done.”
With El Niño looking more and more likely, and Layer as fired up as ever, it’ll be fun (and maybe a little scary) watching what he does out at Jaws this coming winter.
Winter is coming.
