From 156 Tricks to Doped Youth, Ozzie Wright was behind some of the most celebrated surf flicks of the early-internet, VHS and DVD era.
But since then, Ozzie has started a handful of other projects – touring and making music with his band, the Goons of Doom, making art, quilting, starting a family, etc.
Surf flicks took a backseat. But he hasn’t quit them entirely.
Adapting with the times, Ozzie has started a YouTube channel in recent months, entitled The Wrong Channel. And the latest edit shows that although the medium for distributing surf flicks has changed, Ozzie’s surfing has not…all these years later.
The clip shows Ozzie surfing and frolicking with the same carefree spirit as we’re used to seeing, although the airs are a little more reserved compared to his younger self in 156 Tricks and he’s not bellyflopping onto a bed of rocks a la Doped Youth.
However, he still rips; he’s still having fun. More so than most other surfers out there. If there’s anything that Ozzie will be remembered for, it’s reminding everyone to not take surfing so seriously. Have fun with it. Try out a weird board. Bring a doll into the barrel with you. Don’t follow the flock. Huck an air with reckless abandon. Be yourself.
Onya, Ozzie.
