Surf cinematographer Tim Bonython loves shooting the world’s biggest, most beautiful, and monstrous waves.
He spends his time capturing iconic and often terrifying waves like Nazaré, Shipstern Bluff, and recently, some Australian “secret” spots.
But with the edit he released yesterday, Bonython offers something a little different with a throwback to practically perfect Teahupo’o in 2021.
The edit above is captioned:
“One the great swell events to go down at Teahupo’o in Tahiti. Friday 13th August 2021 during Covid.
“See all the incredible rides in one of the most historic swells events in its history. Filmed by Marco au Bouvant.”
Like a lot of Bonython’s films, there’s not a lot of dialogue, offering viewers the opportunity to get lost in the surf with music.
The film features big wave heavyweights like Matahi Drollet, Lucas Chianca, Justine Dupont, Tereva David, Kala Grace, JB Prunier, Eimeo Czermak, Kauli Vaast, Nathan Florence, and as usual, legendary Raimana van Bastolaer overseeing it all.
The waves are absolutely firing and they all score mind-blowing barrels.
“I’m really stoked, I’m really stoked because the wave is just perfect,” says French surfer Justine Dupont after her session.
Viewers were psyched on the footage. You can read a few of their comments below:
“Matahi Drollet is on another level”
“Matahi is sooo dialed, catching proper barrels”
“I guess you just can’t bottom turn at teahupoo – not even a smidgin.”
“Gotta be honest, never knew there was a right at Teahupoo.”
“Dear God some of those were some really really deep take off man you got your pushing the envelope on some of those. RLTW 3/75”
“I hope they run the Olympic games in these conditions.”
“That Lucas wave that’s half blue half brown looked insane, also hows Matahi’s hat getting blowed off his head as he exits the barrel. Truely a great swell event.”
