Generally speaking, surfers prefer waves to themselves.
While there is a time and place for “party waves,” the average surfer on the average wave at the average surf spot wants the ride all to themselves. No plus ones.
But what about big waves? Waves in which there’s much more space for surfers to share? Like, for example, this utterly massive tandem wave from Nazaré recently.
The clip comes from Tim Bonython – world traveler, big wave lover, surf cinematographer. It features chargers Michelle Des Bouillons and Will Santana. And it comes from a session that just went down at the Portuguese surf spot, home to the biggest waves in the world. Apparently, as evidenced by the clip and Bonython’s words, the beast has awoken.
On the other side of the lens, sounds like Bonython had a hectic experience himself:
“Today I was in my favorite spot. In the big wave lineup. But what made it different was I had a different driver. @nuno_santos_violino is one of those guys who’s had more time in the NAZARE line up than most. Thanks to @nazarejet for making it happen.

“Nuno kept it safe even though we got run down by one monster set. I think we spent a good 10 minutes on the inside dealing with a crazy amount of whitewater trying to get back out. But finally we did. I gotta say my heart was racing during that episode. Nuno was great and really appreciated his time & experience in the lineup.
“So yep, it was actually very BIG. I’d say 20 to 40 feet PROPER!! Maybe a little bigger on the BOMBS!! It definitely was some of the biggest waves I’ve shot in the water this season since that trip to Morocco. I was stoked to bag a couple bombs with @franciscoporcella that you can all look forward to. Here we have @willyamsantana and @michelle.bouillons on a monster..”
Stay tuned; more to come from this swell at Nazaré.
