Most pro surfers wait for a perfect swell, and then strike.
Dylan Graves, on the other hand, is looking for something…different.
For example: Last summer, when everyone flocked to Indonesia for one of the first big swells, Graves jumped a flight over as well. But, rather than hit Padang, Deserts, or G-Land, he flew to a random island with a weird wedge and spent three days trying to tame it. Literally nobody else thought about surfing that wave, especially on a massive swell. But the resulting edit was wildly entertaining.
In that same vein, Graves flew to France recently. But not where you might think. Rather than head to Hossegor to hunt shorebreak tubes, he flew to Brittany (ever heard of anyone surfing in Brittany?), to acid drop off walls and pull into tubes in front of rocks.
“Thanks to a social media post, I connected with Ian Fountain and some of the locals in Brittany, France for a big winter storm,” writes Graves. “Brittany is the largest French peninsula in the NW of France and one of the hardest coasts to score, due to its massive tides, translating to short surf windows… Combine that with nearly 2000 miles of coastline, that’s a tough shoe to polish…
“So, why come here? By now I hope you have a gist for my taste in waves and surf trips…
“And I definitely enjoy the going off the beaten path, especially when it comes to surf trips. I had always gone to South west France… So with interesting charts lighting up the north I thought… What would it take to score waves in Brittany?”
