After several days of no competition, plagued by unfavorable conditions, the World Surf League went on hold for a potential return of the Lexus Pipe Pro on Monday, as a sizable swell arrived and ignited the famed North Shore of Oahu.
But then, after multiple pushbacks in start time, and careful assessments of the waves and mounting swell, the contest was called off for the day.
It looks like, after not enough swell there was…too much swell?
“The Lexus Pipe Pro Presented by YETI, Stop No. 1 on the World Surf League (WSL) 2024 Championship Tour (CT), is OFF for the day after a series of holds throughout the morning,” a press release read. “With anticipation building over the weekend for new potential at Pipe, multiple swells jumbling the lineup disrupted the opportunity for a big day of competition.”
Translation: It was deemed too big.
Surf fans were already on edge, as the World Surf League’s reigning world champion, Filipe Toledo, mysteriously withdrew from the kickoff competition due to supposed “food poisoning.” Many suspected other motives.
On the WSL’s announcement of Monday’s cancelation, fans wrote:
“You gotta be kidding me, cancel today‼️ WTF happened to pro surfing now days. It’s a circus run by clowns.” – Legendary North Shore heavy, Johnny Boy Gomes
“Just watched 6 epic waves in 5 mins. What gives?”
“Filipe said it’s too big.”
Earlier in the day, before competition was officially called off, world champion and Olympic gold medalist Italo Ferreira snagged a wave that probably would’ve scored a perfect 10. Too bad. Would’ve been cool to see that one in a jersey.
