Right now, from behind the safety of a computer screen, I’m sure you’re telling yourself you’d paddle out solo at 6- to- 8 foot Greenbush and rush it the way Jackson Bunch did.
But would you, really?
A solo surf during an Indo boat trip is a rare thing these days. After all, Indo is the place to take a surf trip, and the marquee waves — like Greenbush — are swarmed on every solid swell. But somehow Jackson Bunch stumbled upon a unicorn: A perfect day without another surfer in sight. “We pulled up to Greenbush on the last day of our boat trip and it was on!,” writes Bunch in the description of this YouTube clip. “Firing waves with no one out! Thought I was dreaming!”
Greenbush is no joke. A Teahupo’o-esque slab over super sharp reef. Way out in the middle of the Mentawai Islands, where medical help is nonexistent. So, while it’d be tempting to paddle out alone and charge one of the best tubing lefts in the world, faced with the reality of the decision, most surfers would be happy mind-surfing a few and moving on to live (and surf) another day.
Jackson Bunch is not most surfers.
