For most of the world, January 1st rang in the new year.
But according to the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Water Rabbit is still in full swing until February 9th. The very next day, the Year of the Dragon kicks off.
While the Chinese zodiac consists of 12 landlubber animals, 2023 seemed more like the Year of the Shark, thanks to an abundance of shark and human encounters ranging from the good to the bad, and the downright ugly and sad.
It turns out, we’re not the only ones who have thought about revamping the ancient calendar and adding the world’s most feared oceanic animal.
In 2019, a reporter from Nova Southeastern University’s student newspaper argued that its very own shark mascot should replace the pig in the Chinese zodiac.
The website Primal Astrology also explores the great white shark as a zodiac sign. It describes people born under the shark sign as, “The most restless of the Primal Zodiac and need a constant stream of new experiences to keep them mentally healthy.”
To celebrate a very sharky year, California-based nature videographer Carlos Gauna, aka The Malibu Artist, just released the montage above of his best shark footage.
He captioned it:
“Best Great White Shark Drone Footage of 2023 (Narrated) 4K
“This is my annual collection of my favorite great white shark moments filmed with my drone over the course of this year.
“Watch until the end. It is something nobody has ever seen before. Everything here is presented in 4K and was captured along the coast of Southern, Central, & Northern California.”
Press play above for a glimpse into the secret life of sharks. After all, you might actually be one someday (according to the stars).
