Flexibility is crucial for surfing.
There’s a lot of bending, twisting, and contorting that comes with riding a wave – at least, riding a wave properly, and not like the tin man from the Wizard of Oz.
So, to add a little grease to those joints, a lot of surfers try yoga.

Malia Ward, daughter of famed San Clemente surfer Chris Ward, has shared her pre-surf yoga routine. It involves a lot of basic poses, too; meaning you don’t have to be a yogi master like Gerry Lopez to try these out.
Captioning the video, Malia wrote:
“Sharing my yoga surf warm up I like to do before I get in the ocean.
“The video is sped up but usually I take 3-5 breathes for each pose. Here’s a list of the poses:
-cat/cow
-downward dog to dangling pose
-rise up to mountain
-downward dog-> three legged dog-> pigeon
-warrior 2 -> reverse-> side angle
“Please let me know if this helps your surfing and if you guys want to see more surf training I do!”
It’s simple stuff, and it won’t take too long to implement into your pre-surf routine, either.
One commenter asked:
“How long should this take to do all of them before a surf?”
And Malia responded:
“Should take around 9 minutes.”
There ya go; no excuses. Everyone’s got less than ten minutes to stretch out before paddling out. And plus, your body will thank you in the long run.
