Sad and (and quite frankly) strange news out of New Jersey, today, as a lifeguard was reportedly impaled by a beach umbrella. The woman – whose name, age, etc. has yet to be released – was working at Asbury Park Beach when the incident occurred around 9:30am on Wednesday morning.
It’s unclear how the umbrella speared the woman, but it’s likely that the wind had something to do with it. But boy oh boy, did that seemingly harmless beach accessory do some damage.
The umbrella went through the woman’s upper left shoulder, and came out her back.
Somehow, the victim remained conscious throughout the entire ordeal.
Her fellow lifeguards were first to provide medical attention to the victim soon after the incident. Then, the fire department and EMS arrived to further help the woman.
But when they did, since this wasn’t your average beach injury, they were a little stumped. How were they going to remove this metal pole, which was sticking out both sides of her? Well, they cut one end of it off to shorten it, before transporting her to the hospital for further treatment.

Asbury Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Keddy said: “She’s a tough young woman.” He also added a warning: “Make sure your umbrellas are secure in the sand and carry them with the point down.”

In other New Jersey surf and beach related news, recently, just south of Asbury in Belmar a surfer who was involved in a dispute over a beach badge, and was subsequently tackled by a police officer entered a plea deal in the case. The entire incident was captured on video.
