Viral young Brazilian surfer, Joao Vitor, is stepping up his game in bigger surf.
At the shockingly young age of two, Joao Vitor surfed his first wave.
While most other kids his age were still learning how to walk on land, Joao was in the water and honing his skills on a surfboard. And now, at six years old – practically a veteran at this point – the young kid from Guajara, Brazil is stepping it up in bigger waves, waves well overhead for the pint-sized prodigy.
Joao’s mother, Camilla Chuque Braga, runs an Instagram account for her son and his older sister, Maria Clara, another surfing prodigy. And she recently posted footage from Joao’s big-wave (at least, for him) surf session. She captioned the video, translated from Portuguese, as such:
“This swell that came to stay and I couldn’t hold Jony this time. He wanted to get into the marathon, face the waves much bigger than him, take some on his head and still came out satisfied.
“Our boy is growing up and I think he’s going to like the big ones.
“A lot of courage for a 6-year-old boy?”
A lot of courage is right.
Previously, Joao had gone viral on social media for multiple surf clips, including what people are calling the “youngest surfer to ever get barreled.” He was five years old at the time, and surfing in a wavepool.

In an interview with WION, Joao’s mother Camilla spoke a bit more about her son’s early introduction to surfing and his love for the sport:
“Joao had started taking swimming lessons when he was just 7 months old hence, he always did well in the waters.
“In addition to his father who surfs every day, his sister Maria Clara has also been surfing since she was little, and he has always loved watching her in the waves. I think she was the biggest inspiration for João.”
As for Joao’s future in surfing? A World Champion in the making?
“I think it’s too early to talk about a professional future,” she said. “As of now he loves to surf and has a lot of fun at sea.”
