After 1,300 miles on the road, dozens of screenings from New York to Florida, the surf movie party still has not stopped. This week, members of the Blak Bear Surf Club and Snapt are heading on yet another road trip, this time on the US West Coast. Tucked in their black van are hard drives with two movies worth paying the price of admission at your local surf shop, theater or parking lot: Snapt 5 and Ride the Line. If you’re unfamiliar with Snapt 5, click here. If you’re unfamiliar with Blak Bear, the uptempo surf accessories company, allow Snapt creator and director Logan Dulien to explain.
“I usually don’t partner up with surf brands, I’ve always kept Snapt neutral, but Blak Bear Surf Club is different and I love what they’re doing, what they stand for, not to mention how sick their team and traction pads are,” Logan posted before the tour launched. “It’s refreshing to see a brand owned and run by a surfer like (Teva Dexter). A brand that has zero corporate ties. They’re fucking winging it and making shit happen. It made perfect sense to partner up with them. So I’m proud to announce at all Snapt 5 premieres, both domestic and international, we will be playing their new movie Ride The Line.”
Blak Bear’s cast doesn’t run as deep as Snapt 5 (50 surfers, give or take), but it holds its own in terms of character and sheer barado. Billy Kemper, Al Cleland Jr and Balaram Stack are just a few to be reckoned with.
Their first stop on the West Coast Tour is at Carmel Surf Shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea (September 15), followed by Proof Lab Surf Shop in Marin County (September 16), the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz (September 17), Cruise Control Contemporary studio in Cambria (September 18), and the Solento Surf Film Festival in Encinitas (September 20).
In case you needed another appetizer to whet your Snapt palate, consider this clip of Mason Ho toying with a delightful Mexican sandbar. No surprises here, Mason makes numerous idyllic tubes. But the best ones are still on ice for Snapt 5. If you want to see the keepers, find a screening near you.
Stay tuned to Blak Bear and Snapt for more screening dates to come.
