Earlier this year, the hit MTV show Jackass marked its 25th anniversary. In April of 2000, the world was introduced to Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, and others in a series of stunts that involved taser guns, explosive porta potties, fat suit skateboarding, and more. Needless to say, the show went on to be a success.
And all these years later, while the original cast of Jackass has grown too old, too fragile to do the stunts they once did – with Knoxville’s injuries alone racking up a mind-blowing $8,663,000 in hospital bills alone, according to reports – the legacy lives on.
You see it in the youth of today, ripping wheelies on their e-bikes, sparking sneers from anyone over the age of 25. You see it on YouTube with prank channels. And you see it on social media, mostly the wild world of TikTok; but these adolescents in the following video have shared their Jackass-inspired antics on Instagram. And the surf winch hooked up to a car brings a glimmer of joy from the bygone early aughts.
The posse goes by the name Oppie Toppie. And while their account offers little details into the what these New Zealanders are like from a human perspective, their posts speak for themselves. There’s dirt bikes, snowboard faceplants, backflips, cliff jumps, and of course, skitching behind vehicles on all types of crafts.
Their latest contraption appears to be their best yet: a winch, hooked up to a tire of a eggplant purple Ford Capri, with the other end towing the boys on surfboards.

Now, I recently had the honor of riding an electric surfboard, which could hit top speeds of 35 miles per hour. That was insanely fast to be moving on the surface of water. Terrifying, in fact. Any miniscule bump was like a mine, sending shockwaves through the spine. And hitting the water at those speeds? It nearly warranted body armor.
These boys are going even faster. And the slams are even harder. But godamn, are they having a good time. We’ll keep an eye on these crazy Kiwis.
